The Squirrel Travelflow is designed to provide pressure relief, pain relief and comfort to adventures, travellers and sports people that just happen to use wheelchairs, car seats and canoes.
It fits on top of most standard divan beds (hotels, guest houses, cruise liners) and enhances the pressure relieving properties of the source mattress (foam and pocket sprung). This intelligent system is designed to provide caplliary stimulation to the sacrum, heels, upper body and legs – areas that might suffer neurological pain, pins and needs and possibly skin damage.
The system can be used for 45 minutes respite or can be left on the bed to provide a gentle stimulation of the capillaries throughout the night. This can help to prevent and heal pressure ulcers, to reduce muscle spasms and reduce neurological pain.
Of course we are all unique and it would be wrong to suggest that each and everyone of is will experience the same benefits and so we suggest that clinical advice is sought from tissue viability and / or district nurses and that one of these is trialed for a number of days prior to commencing travel.
The Travel flow comes with a UK specification compressor and power cable and, comes with optional compressors for use overseas – such as the USA or for boat cruises.
The travel flow uses a subtle movement of numerous air pockets which stimulate the capillaries, thus removing waste toxins and helping replenish with fresh oxygenated blood.
Caution: Air mattresses must be used as part of a managed clinical care package to include good nutrition, good hydration and regular repositioning and appropriate clinical intervention. This should be assessed based on the needs of the individual as some people will require very high levels of managed care and others very little. It would be wrong to say that this mattress would give the same clinical performance to all persons of weights as £4k replacement. What we are saying is that everyone is unique, most would like to travel and this might be the solution. We therefore offer a free 7 day no quibble trial period to allow potential users the option to address this question in conjunction with their own clinical advisors.
We recommend an upper weight limit of 17 stone and of course recommend as much clinical intervention as is necessary.
We have already adapted a version to be used on a cruise liner and supply a small carry bag. This is clearly marked medical equipment, as this will normally ensure no excess luggage surcharges.
The travel overlay was launched at Naidex Birmingham in April 2011 to mass acclaim.
Many wheelchair users said that they did not normally use airflows but admitted feeling sore after long car journeys and after sitting in a wheelchair.
They suggested that capillary stimulation which happens as a result of the soft and perpetual massage produced by the pneumatic chambers would allow natural recuperation and therapy to ensure that the following day would be used to the optimum.

Clinical Effectiveness
The effectiveness of this system will also depend on the mattress base that you place it on. Most hotels offer good quality pocket sprung or foam mattresses.
The Squirrel Travel Overlay fits a sports hold all and can be unrolled onto any pocket sprung bed. This in turn provides pressure relief which allows freedom to travel anywhere (boats included)
Most hotels offer disabled accommodation but will normally only provide a standard divan bed complete with pocket sprung mattress. This is questionable, as travel places additional stress upon our bodies, which should be relieved during our sleep. This could be diminishment of aches and pains through to the prevention of pressure ulcers (formerly known as bed sores).
The Travel flow tm overlay is designed to improve the pressure relieving qualities of the source mattress. It works by way of providing a subtle stimulation to the capillaries, which in turn reduces occlusion. This gentle massage will normally improve blood flow, remove waste toxins and help sensitive skin tissue recover from the stresses that travel and wheelchair use can cause. It can make sleep more pleasurable, comfortable and medically effective.
The Travel flow is portable and rolls up into a small travel bag. The entire system is just 3” in depth and can fit under bedding and so allow for discreet use in partner / double beds.
As with all Squirrel products, the Travel flow must be used with sound judgment, bearing in mind the unique needs and wishes of the individual. This means that some wheelchair users will use it as a therapeutic aid independently – to be used without interference for comfort, relaxation and pressure relief during travel, where as others will require managed clinical intervention.
With regards to those at higher risk of pressure ulcers, this is a low profile air mattress and has been used effectively, in conjunction with good clinical care to treat grade 1 and 2 pressure ulcers.
