The Squirrel Diamond SDII (Patent Pending) is a high-end full replacement air mattress designed to aid in the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers up to grade 4.
It includes MLAL (ventilated micro low air loss), which means that the air cells continuously re-adjust to the patient’s unique profile. This consistent level of support coupled with traditional AB alternation, ensures that capillary occlusion is significantly reduced.
This intelligent system has been specifically designed in partnership with several prominent physiotherapists and tissue viability nurses, on the understanding that the reduction of heat, moisture, bed falls, muscle spasms and mattress acquired infections are of equal importance. The mattress was subject to the rigorous NHS tender process 2008 – 2009, and is now widely used within various local authorities, NHS trusts and hospices including Hampshire PCT, Royal Navy Benevolent and Sue Ryder Care.

The system comprises of 58 static and MLA cells, which gently support the user, whilst the system redistributes body mass, simulating the natural body movements, which helps to prevent the starvation of oxygen to tissues and the build-up of cellular waste. Also – by limiting tissue distortion whilst in a profiling position (hospital beds) -it’s possible to reduce shear forces that are a key component in slip and pressure ulcer formation. Its gentle movement also facilitates increased permeability of blood capillaries within the area, increasing blood flow. This can be of great benefit to all patients irrespective of pressure risk. Associated clinical effects with some patients include a modest reduction in chronic pain and muscle spasms. All of this is achieved in a mattress which is just 12.5 cms or 5 inches deep – enabling its safe and legally complaint use on all modern nursing and hospital beds.

The Diamond Independence is a full replacement air flow mattress, that has been specifically designed in partnership with several prominent physiotherapists, tissue viability nurses and OT’s, on the understanding that self positioning, physiotherapy and independence are sometimes of equal importance as the traditional pressure relieving qualities of a dynamic airflow mattress.
An intelligent digital Pump operates the Squirrel Diamond. It is a simple plug and play system that allows the nurse or care assistant to adjust the comfort settings for each patient. CPR can be affected with a simple pull tag and due to its ultra low height the system will deflate in seconds. The Squirrel Diamond also comes complete with an optional set of easy change all over covers –which means that each cover can be laundered in between patients, removing a major source of cross infection.

Lymington New Forest Hospital Takes the Pressure off for its Patients
Lymington New Forest Hospital has given its patients ‘diamonds’ this Christmas, with 20 new pressure-reliving mattresses that will not only improve physiotherapy, but also reduce bed sores and the chances of bed falls.
The diamond mattresses, from Squirrel Medical – one of two suppliers providing to the hospital, will make physiotherapy sessions far easier; the firmness in the mattress allows patients to be treated more effectively, as the physiotherapists can move the patient around easier and provide patients with more support. The new mattresses also have the same feel of a high quality foam mattress, so patients will find the experience far more comfortable.
As well as all this, the mattresses will help to reduce the chances of bed falls as they fit in the bed frame even better than traditional deep-cell mattresses. This also helps to reduce the chances of entrapment and bed falls. The modern design of these mattresses prevent the ‘pinching effect’ underneath patients which can causes pressure ulcers to those in a seated position for long periods of time. Also, as the mattresses are only five inches high, patients are able to get in and out of bed more easily and those with mobility problems will be able to move more freely, especially from a lying to sitting position.
