The scourge of fire affects most of us and perhaps none so much as those trapped in bed. Most rural fire stations suggest a period of between 30 and 45 minutes between first call and full response. (We advise you checking this within your locality)
This is, considering many crews are part time, a great response – but of course in a real fire 30 -45 minutes would be disastrous.
Most care homes now come equipped with some form of fire evacuation devices within each room. These are designed to drag or carry patients (as circumstances permit) from their beds to safety.
Evo Overlay Mattress (with Fire Evacuation)
The Evo is an intelligent combination of pressure relieving overlay (that sits on top of your pocket spring or divan mattress) and fire evacuation system. The top part is made of high density medical grade foam that amplifies the pressure relieving qualities of the source mattress. This is kept permanently in place and fits sprung and divan mattresses as found in most residential care homes.
It is just 9cm in depth and the topside is covered in a vapour permeable, two way stretch wipe clean material. In event of emergency the fabric that is tucked under the source mattress are folded and fastened over the patient. The entire foam base, patient and all are then lifted onto the floor. The base has a durable PVC coating which acts as a bearing to enable it to be dragged across the floor. As the mattress element is foam and just 9cm it folds to enable transfer through door ways (pocket sprung mattresses don’t) and provides adequate cushioning to slide the unit and patient down the stairs.
Of course this must be used in accordance with evidence based training which should take place in line with CQC recomendations.
Two people of sufficient strength are required to use this system.
