Squirrel Medical specialise in the research and design of pressure relieving mattresses and cushions. Whilst our initial research was fundamentally aimed at the prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers (formerly known as bed sores) we have expanded our remit to include associated benefits. For example we have found that the Squirrel Diamond Mattress (Patent Applied For) has proven effective in terms of the prevention and treatment of muscle spasms (spastic hypertonia) with some clients and positively diminished neurological pain amongst others. Of course we are all unique and it would be wrong to claim that a Squirrel Diamond will benefit all of us – but equally we must push the boundaries of research further to investigate the potential benefits to various medical conditions. It is at this stage that we must ask for your help. We have set out a list of medical conditions and associated issues with regards to the use of dynamic air mattresses and we would like your comments. We are a small team of designers and you can rest assured that we will listen to your views. We provide most of our mattresses and seating on a 14 day trial period and, if you feel that Squirrel could positively affect your situation then we would welcome the opportunity to hear from you. Recent developments that have resulted as feedback from clients include:
Julie Rogers of Elizabeth Finn Trust suggested that the metal hooks on the pumps that attach to the footboard of the bed could be dangerous to the soles of patients feet. After much deliberation Julie suggested that the metal hooks could link together providing one smooth structure, that would hold the weight of the pump whilst protecting the patients feet. This suggestion was adopted in 2010 and has benefited several hundred clients ever since.
Chris Mason, a design technician felt that hotels and disabled accommodation rarely catered for the needs of those at risk of muscle spasms, pressure ulcers and chronic pain. Chris suggested a portable airflow mattress that could be carried by the wheelchair user and assembled on then hotel bed. The idea being that the overlay would amplify the pressure reliving properties of the source divan mattress. This product is now in production and has been supplied to users in the USA and throughout Europe.
