(circa) 44,000 people are reported to have fallen from their hospital beds per annum (2007).

(circa)  11 people are reported to have died following a bed fall per annum (2007)

Those charged with reporting bed falls, injuries and deaths due to bed falls are normally night shift workers (minimum waged / unskilled) and face instant dismissal. This is because many have day jobs and simply bed down at night missing the tragedy that unfolds around them.

Pressure ulcers, also known as pressure sores, bedsores or decubitus ulcers are areas of tissue damage that occur as a result of prolonged interruption of tissue oxygenation. External forces including high and prolonged pressure, friction (the resistance to lateral movement) and shear (distortion of tissues caused by lateral and rotational forces) cause occlusion of blood vessels.
